The news roundup returns next week, so in the meantime we thought we’d share our conversation with Christina Heatherton, Elting Associate Professor of American Studies and Human Rights at Trinity College, Connecticut. Her book Arise! Global Radicalism in the Era of the Mexican Revolution
This episode was a gem. Mexico is under discussed especially relative to Europe. If only they had more English speaking people.
Have you been following the recent labor reforms there? 2017 they pass a constitutional amendment to their article on labor rights. 2019 AMLO signs new labor legislation into law. Part of Mexico's continuing democratization since at least 2000. US is also a part of something good for once and it's under Trump? Great ILO article on it here. https://www.ilo.org/static/english/intserv/working-papers/wp015/index.html
There are plenty of English speakers in Mexico. Not to mention that Mexico is the country with the greatest number of Americans outside of the United States.
What other great interviews have you been hiding for over half a year?
Smth else: Is the transcript (fully) by machine or by human, just human-edited?
Yeah, we're always working through a backlog of interviews, so more to come!
The transcript is a new Substack feature that is 100% machine.
This is an incredible interview! Christina Heatherton is brilliant. I just bought her book.
The art of evasion at its best. Would have been nice to hear something about the Mexican Revolution.
You guys went deep on this one. I was nervous and worried about getting lost when Danny asked a few "inside academia" questions.
Great topic that is not discussed often enough. Strong start to 2024.
