Danny and Derek are joined by Juliet Lu, assistant professor at the University of British Columbia and co-host of The Belt and Road Podcast, to discuss, you guessed it: China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)! They get into China’s ideological vision for the project, the Sinophobia around it, how the project compares with non-Chinese institutions’ infrastructure development, the soft power angle, different populations’ reactions to Chinese-branded projects, the debt discourse, and more.
Very informative interview. I would love to hear more!!
All the interviews are highly informative!
Not the best article on the debt issue, but the photos of the new things are pretty accurate. There's still plenty of the city that looks like the "before" photos, though. I went there about 4 years ago.
For anyone interested in the "debt trap" issues, the discourse on debt from Washington rising maybe to disinformation, and more broadly, development in global south as related to China, newsletter/podcast China in Africa seems like a good resource. Think found it via Kantu on FX Discord. Sinica Podcast from same podcast family is great for all things China.
