Danny and Derek welcome Jennifer Mittelstadt, professor of history at Rutgers University, and Mark Wilson, professor of history at UNC Charlotte, to discuss their new edited volume The Military and the Market. They talk about the military welfare state and the all-volunteer force (AVF), mercenaries within the system, and more.
I feel like the British Empire military and East India Company cold be fertile ground for a comparison with the US empire military interaction with 'the market.'
While I appreciate the effort here I didn't get much from this episode. Concrete examples of who benefitted from the shift to privatization and how would have been helpful. Who was pushing privatization and how did it occur? It seems that much of todays military is run by the private sector.
