Jeffrey Lewis, professor at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies on the Nonproliferation and Terrorism Faculty, joins Danny and Derek to discuss his new podcast The Reason We’re All Still Here, which covers scientists, analysts, and idealists who have gone above and beyond in the name of peace and diplomacy when state actors fail to do so. This discussion focuses on the podcast itself as well as questions about Marx’s theory of alienation, the hope of changing the massive structures all but guaranteeing our demise, and why being an “imperfect part of the solution” might be worthwhile.
Fantastic episode. The sisyphean “fuck you” may be the only response to nearly every existential threat humanity faces, but, well, fuck it. Although the fight may be absurd, it’s still a fight that must be fought.
Excellent episode. It really is a question of how to build a (state?) project that incentivizes everyday people to take ownership of solution-making...in a time when people feel too helpless/hopeless to even try and fail. Difficult but not impossible.
