I read (in Alan Ryan's book on Politics) that at the end of his life J.S. Mill, liberalism's founder (?), thought that liberalism would inevitably lead to Socialism, a development he welcomed. Unfortunately he didn't say how. What we have learned is that liberalism can be gamed by illiberal forces. Contrary to liberal ideals, the masses in the USA have little to no input into how they are governed.

Been looking forward to the article, congrats. I'm curious how many of those 30,000 citations ding Fukuyama on how thin his theory of democracy in EoH - Last Man was, which seems relevant now his new book tries to make a strong distinction between bad neoliberalism and good "classical liberalism" that doesn't really cash out at least in the substance of his theories of either and how they relate to "liberal democracy".

I recall hearing a cool dude posit a parallel with nietzsche amounting to ‘ideology is dead, ideology remains dead...etc...’ it seems everyone is comfortable pointing out the failings of liberalism and I agree with you that there is no ready alternative... does this just leave us in some kind of interregnum where the owl of Minerva is left in a schizophrenic quivering heap, observing away and concluding that it’s not dusk, just a rogue eclipse?

Wow, as an ancom struggling with just how nihilistic and lonely living under liberalism has become, its refreshing to see you discuss it so frankly.

As bad as it is, it really does appear like liberalism is incapable of preventing capitalism from consuming itself, so in the long run "history might restart again" :).

Thanks for a good read!
